HALT is a helpful acronym that reminds us to not make any important decisions or have any critical discussions when we are under the influence of powerful emotions or we are in states of awareness that predispose us to using mental shortcuts and possibly making poor choices.
Just like in mindfulness practice, being aware of these states and the fact that we might not make good decisions in these states allows us to wake ourselves up; if we are mindful we are aware that we are in these states, and we can delay our reactions until after we have slept, ate, or waited until powerful emotions subside and we can think more rationally.
We have created our own variation of this acronym below.
H stands for hungry
A stands for angry / anxious / or any emotional state of mind that makes us less rational (depressed, jealous, etc.)
L stands for loopy (intoxicated) or lonely
T stands for tired
One final note: in regards to L above, sometimes when under the influence of a substance (intoxication) a person may feel like they have arrived at some new profound insight; even if you feel this to be the case, it is prudent to keep this acronym in mind. Write down this insight and consider it again when you are in a sober state of mind. If it still seems insightful then it would make sense to assimilate or act on this new knowledge.
